A blog of factual reports and personal thoughts on the ongoing restoration of ex-British Rail diesel locomotives 50029 Renown and 50030 Repulse at Peak Rail in Derbyshire, UK.

Power unit lift 29 September 2020

With grateful thanks to technical officers from the Class Fifty Alliance, a highly professional operation by contractors Steve Foster Cranes, the generous patience of our hosts Peak Rail and technical members of RRRG, on 29th September 2020 we successfully lifted the power unit from inside 50030, removed turbochargers from the ex-50008 power unit to send for overhaul and split the generator off the same power unit in preparation for overhaul as well. We now have a full gallery of photos chronicling the events from that day but for now this is restricted to RRRG members who will need to have a current paid up RRRG membership and be logged in to this website. For non-members, some sample images from the day are below; to see the entire gallery please join RRRG.

Grateful thanks to the Class 50 Alliance for the loan of the lifting beam and their technical support. Much preparation work shown in the full gallery included removing the roof hatches and releasing the remaining power unit fixings.

50008 power unit turbocharger removal

We took the opportunity of having the crane on site to lift two turbochargers from the ex-50008 power unit to send them away for overhaul.

50008 power unit main generator removal

Another task successfully completed during the day was to split the main generator off the 50008 power unit, again to send it away for overhaul. The main generator on the power unit removed from 50030 suffered flashover damage and was the cause of the locomotive's BR withdrawal in 1992.
