As one of RRRG's electrical officers I will write about my specialist field as well as general reports of work on site.

Work party report 17 September 2023

Dave Rolfe, Richard Wade, Jay Hirst, Mark Burrows and I were on site today. Richard carried on checking the battery isolation switch and shore supply and battery charge wiring. Jay and I attempted to fit the upper internal panel that goes above the change end switch in No.1 cab, but most of the mounting holes didn't line up, so we looked for another but couldn't find one. Fortuitously, Dave had recently removed the same panel from Renown, so we tried that one, and with a bit of persuasion, made it fit. It was removed again, and Jay cleaned the old paint and surface rust from it, and it was undercoated. Dave had been refitting the overhauled air engines that operate the radiator shutters, not the easiest of tasks, as they are in the fan compartment, and access requires lying down under the fan and reaching past your head. After reconnecting the EP valves, he rigged an air supply, and using Richard's test kit, he and I tried the mechanism. The driver's side opened and closed as it should, but the shutters on the secondman's side didn't move. We had refurbished the mechanisms some years ago, so maybe the secondman's side has seized up again, as that side gets all the weather hitting it. Jay's cover picture for this report shows Dave fitting one air engine, the second is lying by him. Mark barred round the power unit, which we do on a regular basis to keep it prepared for reinstallation into 50030, and pumped oil round it. He also  lubricated the turbos, and did more hoovering under No.2 cab floor.
